Lollar’s Grove School
Constructed in 1927, this charming two-room red schoolhouse served the Lollar’s Grove community in Webster County. Before then, local children attended school at Lollar’s Grove Baptist Church. Attendance varied but averaged around 25-40 children at any given time. There was usually only one teacher, but a principal or assistant was also occasionally employed. After only seven years of use, community members went to the Webster County School Board and requested consolidation after considering the “many advantages of the school children in Mathiston Con. School District over the advantages of the school children in the Lollar’s Grove School District….” At this request, the schoolhouse ceased operations in 1934 and consolidated with Mathiston. Lollar’s Grove School was one of the last rural schools operating in Webster County and was used as a home and hay barn in its later years.
