Barrett Law Offices Renovation

Completed in phases over 5 years, the former Rayner Building was rehabilitated for use as a law office, with the exterior restoration of the building completed first. A lightweight cornice was installed inspired by the original as seen in early postcard photographs, non-original paint was removed from the masonry, the awning was restored, and the wood storefront was restored to its original appearance. The interior of the building was completed in several phases. The decorative pressed tin ceiling, throughout the first floor was restored as well as the original cypress flooring and plaster perimeter walls. The upper floors retain their pine flooring and tongue and groove pine ceilings. The brick and plaster perimeter walls were preserved in their ‘as fair’ condition. Storage closets and mechanical ductwork and vents were incorporated into a line of casework that extends down each side wall, in a similar manner to the original shelving and display cabinetry. New partitions do not extend to the ceiling, maintaining the open character of the space. The steel post and beam system was left exposed and incorporated into the new layout of spaces. The rehabilitation of this building has had a positive impact on the community and encouraged other buildings to be upgraded on the courthouse square.
