Collins Depot Restoration
The historic Collins Railroad Depot (Gulf & Ship Island RR Depot) was built in the late 1800s-early 1900s and is typical of a small town southern train depot of the time. The City of Collins purchased the depot with the intention of restoring and turning into a local Community/Meeting Place that will house City Events as well as private parties and events. Project was funded using a federally funded Transportation Enhancement Grant administered by Mississippi Department of Transportation.
Restoration work included the removal of 3 non-original additions, reconstruction of removed walls and complete rehabilitation of the upper freight room and lower ticketing areas. New ADA restrooms, a kitchenette, 2 offices and 2 large multi-purpose/meeting rooms were incorporated into the project. The restored and painted wood siding, restored and replicated wood windows, new wood shingle roof along with the exterior courtyard, lighting, loading dock, parking area and landscaping brought new life to the depot and to the City of Collins.
