Walthall Baptist Church Addition
The Walthall Baptist Church has evolved and grown over the last couple of decades. An educational wing and multi-purpose facility were added in 1992, and a sanctuary was added in 2004. The new traditional sanctuary is designed to seat 350 people on the main floor with a choir of 50, and a balcony area to seat 120. The carillon tower located at the front of the sanctuary contains the foyer and is lit from above by a monumental stained glass window.
The multi-purpose room and classroom addition was sited to take advantage of the natural slope of the land. This slope allowed for the development of a lower level that is partially below grade. The new multi-purpose room is a full two story height to accommodate basketball and other activities. Natural light is introduced into the multi-purpose room from clerestory windows that run the length of the building. The sloped site allowed for the front elevation of the multi-purpose room to appear to be one story.
The 1992 addition, as well as the new sanctuary addition were designed to complement the red brick and white trim of the existing building.
